Training and Exercises

Exercising Building Emergency Action Plans and Continuity of Operations Plans

Those individuals who have accepted responsibilities stipulated within their Building Emergency Action Plan and/or Continuity of Operations Plan need to be prepared to respond safely and efficiently in an emergency situation. The Office of Campus Emergency Planning will facilitate an appropriate tabletop, functional and/or full-scale exercise for any campus building to test their Building Emergency Action Plan. We will also facilitate an appropriate tabletop, functional and/or full-scale exercise for any campus unit, school, college or department to test their Continuity of Operations Plan. To schedule and coordinate an exercise, contact Todd Short at tshort@illinois.edu.

National Incident Management System Training (NIMS)

As a recipient of federal funds, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Campus is required to establish compliance with various federal directives as it relates to emergency preparedness. Among those directives is Homeland Security Presidential Directive #5, which requires the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign be compliant with the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

In order for NIMS compliance to be met, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is required to adopt, understand, exercise, and train on the elements of the Incident Command System (ICS) when responding to a local, state, or national emergency. NIMS requires certain campus personnel take various ICS classes which are conducted annually by the Office of Campus Emergency Planning. While all faculty, staff and students are welcome to attend the training, the only individuals required to take classes will receive an email from the Office of Campus Emergency Planning mandating their attendance.
